When you start the new Mac for the first time it will startup Setup Assistant (SA), SA will get to a point where it asks if you are migrating from another computer, select Yes and follow the on-screen prompts and it's done! When you buy a new Mac the easiest, quickest and most reliable method is to simply connect the old Mac's Time Machine External Hard Disk to the new Mac using a USB cable before you turn on the new Mac. The external drive I used to run my 2010 iMac, is 1.5 TB with 1.17 TB space available, so I guess about 330 GB was used, but I think 45 to 50 percent is applications. So the question is, Is the new 2021 iMac 256 GB SSD internal hard drive large enough? Did I do the transfer wrong? Or did I get the wrong hard drive and need to return the iMac and do an upgrade? Once I did the transfer, I dumped a lot audiobooks, manuals and other things I had picked up over the years.
(It comes with a 256 GB SSD drive) I had to NOT transfer my iMovies, desktop, and other things to make it fit. But the new iMac says it does not have enough space. The new 21.5 inch iMac arrives yesterday and I think easy, just take the last Time Machine back up, and transfer it to the new iMac. Earlier the internal 500 GB Sata hard drive had died, so I was running it off an external1.5 TB hard drive, with a second 1TB external hard drive for my Time Machine back up, and a third drive (2TB) as a 2nd Time Machine backup.
